One thing that is never a hard question to answer is, “What is there to do this weekend in DeLand?” If it’s not a festival or shopping downtown, it’s enjoying the local parks, museums or taking a stroll through Stetson University’s campus.
An excellent choice is also taking in a show or concert at the historic Athen’s Theater in downtown. Since 1921, the theater has been a landmark perched at the west end of Indiana Ave. Shows and concerts run almost continuously and the lights are rarely dark.
Starting September 24th and running through mid October is Clue, the comedy based on the 1985 movie that was based on the family-favorite board game. The show runs Thursday through Saturday evenings and a matinee on Sunday.
If tribute bands are more your style, Athen’s offers that too. Barbara Steisand, Queen, Billy Joel, The BeeGees, The Carpenters, and Elton John are all on the calendar for the 2021-22.
With the holidays approaching, Athen’s also has plenty of cheer… or fear. Phantasmagoria XII, a “Victorian Horror Troupe” returns for another jaw-dropping show of theatrics, puppetry, haunting story telling and macabre fun in October. For the family, Elf is coming to town in December to bring Christmas cheer for all to hear. Based on the hit movie, Buddy the Elf, discovers his true parentage and goes on a quest to connect with his human father who is, gasp!… on the “Naughty List” An Christmas elf living in New York City? What could possibly go wrong! And to wrap up the holiday season, music lovers of all ages will enjoy the Orlando Big Band playing Christmas classics from the 30’s -60’s.
The Athen’s Theater offers so many entertainment options throughout the year. Take a look at the calendar of events at AthensDeLand.com to find out more and discover the concert of play that you just have to see!
