Not all “Realtors” are created equal. Like “Coke” is often used to refer to any soda, the term “Realtor” is often used interchangeably among all real estate agents, but it is really a designation of an agent or agency that is part of the National Association of Realtors. The National Association of Realtors was founded in Chicago on May 13, 1908 as the National Association of Real Estate Exchanges. It became what is now called the National Association of Realtors (NAR) in 1972.
The term Realtor was originally proposed by Charles N. Chadbourn, in an article in the National Real Estate Journal in March 1916. He wrote, “I propose that the National Association adopt a professional title to be conferred upon its members which they shall use to distinguish them from outsiders… I therefore, propose that the National Association adopt and confer upon its members, dealers in realty, the title of Realtor(accented on the first syllable).”
The NAR governs the hundreds of local Multiple Listing Services (MLSs) which are the information exchanges used across the nation by real estate brokers. The public can view many of these listings on their website Realtor.com, as well as find local Realtor members. The NAR also wields heavy lobbying power to benefit the entire real estate market throughout the United States.
Florida Realtors is the largest trade association in the state with more than 180,000 members. Real Estate agents that are members and active with Florida Realtors are up to date on the latest news, training and regulations affecting the state of Florida. Headquartered in our own backyard of Orlando, their mission is, “… to advance Florida’s real estate industry by shaping public policy on real property issues; encouraging, promoting and teaching consistent standards for ethical practice and professionalism; and building on the efforts of local Boards/Associations to provide the information and tools members need to succeed.”
Locally, Swann Real Estate is a member of West Volusia Realtors. With a main office in Orange City, this local association gives local Realtors opportunities to increase their real estate education, offering specialty classes. These local brokers have a good pulse on what is going on in DeLand and West Volusia through networking and special events to discuss the local market. They also have access to the local MLS (Multiple Listing Service) that allows them to effectively market properties in the DeLand area as well as find properties that are the best fit for their customers.
So the next time you are looking for an agent, look for the Realtor brand. Our team at Swann are all active in the West Volusia Realtor Association, and would be glad to assist you with any real estate needs or concerns you may have.
