West Volusia fans of Halifax Hospital, Daytona’s long-standing, state-owned hospital, will no longer need to drive to the east side of the county for emergency care. Halifax Health is building a freestanding emergency room in Deltona, but that is just the beginning. Drivers along the intersection of Interstate 4 and State Road 472 can currently see the status of the new facility that was originally slated to open December of 2016, but it appears the complex will not open until early 2017. This is only the first phase of what is expected to be a major medical hub for the healthcare provider.

According to an Orlando Business Journal article, Halifax Health bought 31 acres in Deltona in mid-November, 2014 from Trafalgar Holdings LLC, an entity of Orlando-based Property Investment Brokers, for $4.5 million. The land is part of a 147-acre parcel being developed by Property Investment Brokers. Once completed, the land is slated to become Halifax Crossing, a medical hub with other mixed-use developments. A memory-care facility, a pharmacy, fast-food restaurants, medical office buildings and an 80-100-bed hotel also are in the works for that property

For now, the emergency center is estimated to create 60 new jobs with a total payroll of $5.8 million in the first year. Once hospital plans are approved, Halifax will build and incorporate the estimated $60 million-$75 million hospital tower into the emergency department.

So, for those on the west side of the county that prefer Halifax over other medical providers, this emergency room facility will be a welcome addition to the area and a harbinger of things to come to a medically underserved area of Central Florida.  Stay tuned for more updates.
