Why would DeLand need another ice cream shop? People come from miles to visit places like Sweat Spot and Rodeo Whip. Are two new ones really going to make a big difference? To fans of these new institutions, the answer is yes!

With locations in South DeLand and Orange City, West Volusians finally get to experience Jeremiah’s Italian Ice. These locations will be the third and fourth Jeremiah’s in Volusia County, including the Ormond Beach store in October and one in Daytona Beach before that. The 24-year-old brand began franchising last year and now has 30 locations nationwide.

This is not your typical ice cream shop. Each Jeremiah’s location boasts an upbeat atmosphere full of vibrant colors and offers over 40 flavors of indulgent high-quality Italian Ice, as well as rich and creamy Soft Ice Cream. The Jeremiah’s Gelati, which features layers of Italian Ice swirled with thick, homemade Soft Ice Cream offers nearly limitless flavor combinations and is the star of their menu, according to the press release.

At the former location of Sweet Lick’s Ice Cream shop at the corner of Woodland Blvd. and Church St. is Whit’s Frozen Custard. Whit’s has franchises based mostly in the southeast along with Michigan and Ohio, which is where the chain started.

But there are three reasons why frozen custard is thicker, smoother, and creamier than ice cream: 1) Frozen custard uses a higher butterfat content, 2) Making frozen custard is a slower labor-intensive process that is careful to minimize the amount of air blended into the mix, referred to as “overrun,” and finally, 3) The typical serving temperature of frozen custard is 26 degrees, that’s 10 degrees warmer than ice cream.
