Students arriving at Stetson University for the fall semester found a couple of new additions to the campus. A new environmentally friendly fountain and a larger-than-life statue perfectly posed for student selfies.

The Templeton Fountain sits east of the Carlton Union Building surrounded by Sabal palms, Shumard oaks, grass and other plants.  41 jets of water and colored lights are visible through the two-story wall of glass in the Commons Dining Hall. The fountain’s unique design uses a sloping surface to collect and recycle water pumped through the jets. This means the only water lost during use is due to evaporation.

Just a quick walk south to Palm Court a new sculpture of John B. Stetson, tipping one of his famous hats, sits on a bench welcoming all who walk by. Sculptor Erik Blome drove the statue, which weighs approximately 1600 pounds, from his Chicago studio. Stetson’s position on the bench leaves plenty of space for students and visitors alike to pose for a photo.

Both the fountain and statue were donated by Troy and Sissy Templeton. Troy Templeton is a Double Hatter and former university Trustee. The Templetons have previously funded scholarships and the ethics competition.

Dedication ceremonies for the fountain and statue are planned for Oct. 17-18.
